Tailoring

Pamoja Tailoring School

Pamoja Zanzibar offers training for women in tailoring and sewing, in cooperation with Karume Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). The course duration is two years on a half-day basis. Our highly skilled and motivated teachers, together with a modern classroom and sewing machines for practicing, provide our students with all they need for their future profession as tailors.

History

The Pamoja Tailoring School opened on 18/5/2015 having eight students. For one year since the school was opened, all eight students attended well, but just after this period, three of them got married and they decided to terminate their studies, other two married women terminated their studies because their families decided to move to Tanzania mainland. And two of them just left without telling why they leave. Only one student of the first intake managed to graduate May 2017.

On 7/6/2016 we took another intake of ten students. Four terminated their studies due to family and personal problems, but six continued. We are proud that these six students graduated successfully after two years of training on 29/6/2018.

Pamoja decided to give tailoring skills to these women for the purpose of helping them manage their own life and the life of their family and increase their income. There is a saying: "If you educate a woman, you have educated the whole society". This is one of the reasons Pamoja decided to open the tailoring school for women, especially for those who didn’t have the opportunity for high education.

Success

  1. So far Pamoja Tailoring School managed to release well-trained students every year, of who we are proud of
  2. We opened in 2015 and we still move forward
  3. A small research done to compare our students and students of other tailoring schools in Zanzibar encouraged us that we are doing well.

Challenges

  1. Deficiency of working tools
  2. Deficiency of class rooms, for the time being first and second year students, all are in one class room
  3. Tailoring school not yet well published
  4. Some students terminate their studies due to various reasons as mentioned above.

Training duration

To provide our students with more flexibility towards their various other duties, we offer the training on a half-day basis, i.e. 20 hours/week (Monday to Friday morning). The complete duration is four semesters (two years). Our students will receive a KIST certificate as well as a Pamoja certificate after successful completion of the training.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees are 50,000 TZS/semester, to be paid in advance.

How to apply

The training starts each year in January. We hand out application forms to applicants each year from the beginning of November at our head office in Chukwani. After submitting the forms we conduct personal interviews in January.
