Pemba Activities

Our Activities on Pemba

The Pemba Branch of Pamoja Zanzibar was started and established in 2013.  It began as an Adult Education Center in the small town of Konde.  It’s purpose, like our main branch on Unguja, is to empower Zanzibaris, regardless of age, race, religion, or economic status, to better their lives by providing them various educational opportunities.

Our Pemba Branch started with English and Computer Education, but has since expanded to include Teacher Trainings, Microfinance Loan Projects, and varying degrees of Health Education. In conjunction with our purpose of empowering the local Zanzibaris in all areas of life, we are always looking for new ways to use our giftings and abilities to train, teach, and encourage our local friends and community members.

English Education

Adult English conversation courses range from levels 0-5 (Beginner- Advanced), and are taught by native English speakers in the town of Wete. Using the New Bridges Curriculum as a guideline, lessons focus on grammar, writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills.

Computer Education

Locally trained computer teachers provide a 12-week, Basic Computing Course.  This course is designed for beginners, and includes an introduction to the desktop computer, computer hardware and software, proper keyboarding techniques, and basic computer applications, such as: Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Publisher, Internet Explorer and Emailing Systems.

Teacher Trainings

We strongly believe that empowering the local teachers will have the greatest impact on the community and the next generation of Zanzibaris.   In partnership with the local leaders in education, we work alongside the primary and secondary teachers to provide them with trainings and tools for best educational practices.   Our areas of focus are: Lesson Plan Development, English Language Development, Creating Hands On Learning Activities, Classroom Management Ideas, and Integrating Technology into the Classroom and Planning.

Kids Club:  A sub-set of our teacher trainings include a weekly English club for students aged between 5-15.  Teachers are invited to attend to observe teaching techniques and classroom management techniques being modeled.  The teacher engages students with fun, interactive English lessons that focus on grammar, writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills.  Another goal of Kids Club is to show students that learning can be fun!

Business Education / Microfinancing Projects

At the Pemba Branch of Pamoja Zanzibar, we provide local fishermen, farmers, businessmen, and shopkeepers with loans to further their business ventures.  Together with the loans, business experts work with the Zanzibaris to draw up business goals, plans for reaching those goals, and next practical steps.

Health Education / Clinic

In 2015, Pamoja Zanzibar opened its first clinic, providing health services and education to Zanzibaris that are living in villages far from government hospitals.  Health educators from Pamoja Zanzibar have also assisted in seminars on hygiene and safe practices for baby delivery.
